Chasing after a bus

by Ping-Ko Chiu

The illusion of being able to catch the bus that you missed.

Today I stood under the wrong bus stop and saw the bus that I was supposed to take fly by. I ran after it like a mad dog. All the while shaming myself and worrying about what to do for the next 30 mins until the next one comes. But the traffic lights were not in my favor — green traffic lights all the way. I soon gave up as there was no way my tiny legs could beat the mechanical beast going full throttle. But just as I was steeping in my despair, a small traffic jam ahead gave me hope again. I ran like there was no tomorrow but just as i started, traffic loosened. Just like that, little moments of hope and despair continued a few more times until i finally caught up and made it two stations later.

This is not the first time. Most of the time I don’t even make it and would often run half way to my destination before giving up. Story of my life.
